Genocide isn’t a crime that happens only in distant realms ruled by dictators. As Robert Aquinas McNally realized in researching his award-winning The Modoc War, genocide against Native Americans was state-sponsored and funded policy in mid-19th-century California. “The Genocide in California’s Closet” explores the dimensions of this horror, considers its continuing effects in the social, political, and religious DNA of our state and nation, and challenges us as UUs to face the discomfiting reality that large-scale atrocities can happen here.
