Racial Justice Committee
At the February 2011 Board meeting, the Board approved a name change for the Anti-Racism Committee. After a process to develop a vision, mission and strategies, the Committee is now the Racial Justice Committee. All are welcome to join us as we work towards our mission and goals.
Goal 1: To deepen the commitment of our church community to racial justice.
Goal 2: To eliminate institutional and structural racism and build acceptance, equality and justice for all, as we are one human community.
Strategies:
- increasing awareness and education within our church community about issues related to racism, including its impact and expression--personal, interpersonal, and institutional
- increasing accountability:
- opersonally through self reflection, uncovering our unconscious biases and checking out our assumptions
- ointerpersonally by listening with an open heart, acknowledging that impact is different than intent and working towards a fuller understanding of each other
- oinstitutionally by using power and privilege for greater inclusion and evaluating the impact on inclusion of our policies, practices, decision making and outreach, regardless of intent.
- supporting people of color in our church and in the larger community
- connecting our church community to the racial justice efforts of other Unitarian Universalists, regionally and nationally and to those of other faith communities
- celebrating our individual heritage for its place in the human story
Our 2012 work plan includes:
- Developing a Multiculturalism Initiative in support of the MDUUC Vision in Action Multiculturalism Goal
- Multicultural film presentations and discussions
- Beacon articles which highlight the multiculturalism of MDUUC
- Share the film, The Danger of a Single Story, at existing meetings/forums.
